Welcome To the Border States Page
Border states were states that stayed with the union but had sympathies with the south. Those states were Maryland, West Virginia, Kentuky and Deleware. These states were increadibly important to both sides excpecally Maryland and West Virginia.These states had slaves but had the manufactories that could change the war. Even President Lincon took messures to keep these states in the Union.
The border states tried to maintain a nutrallity in the war. While they remained in the union they gave thier symithies to the south and supported thier right to secede. These states however provied both troops and surplies to the Union during the war.
Of the four border states 13% of their population were slaves. This could have given them a strong cause to leave the Union and join the Confederacy. Some historians speculate that these states stayed to keep the benifits of the slave laws of the union.
