There may not have been any major battles in California but, it was the primary source of income of the Union during the war because of the $70 million in gold that passed through the port of San Francisco. They also were a source of volunteers for the Union as well, having more per capita during the Union Army than any other state. Nearly 17,000 Californians enlisted to fight and most who joined served in the west.
