During the Civil War in 1861-1865, Delaware was one of the smallest

states at the time, the second smallest actually. Delaware was

a slave state that remained in the Union.By the 1860's, there

were about 1,800 slaves in Delaware. In 1861, two weeks after

South Carolina secedes from the Union, Delware decides to

reject secession. The first shots indicating the war were

at Fort Sumter in South Carolina on April 12, 1861. Once

Delaware became a prison camp there were about 33,000

prisoners but after the Battle of Gettysburg, it had nearly 12,000

inmates. Once the Civil War started, Delaware claimed the lives

of nearly 600,000 people.
