South Carolina has played many well known roles in the Civil war. In 1860 South Carolina led the secession from the Union, stating that Lincoln's "Opinions and purposes are hostile to slavery" After the Secession of South Carolina other states followed in it's footsteps and it wasn't until 1861 that the real fighting started, and once again, South Carolina was the head of it. Fort Sumter, located in South Carolina, was where the first gun shots of the civil war were heard. The confederacy won and completed their first victory as an army. It was here that the bloodiest war known throughout American history, started.
