The Union consisted of 26 states. The Union fought to try to keep the Confederate States form seceding fro the United States. The Confederate States wanted to secede from the United States because they thought the president Lincoln was going to abolish slavery. But in all reality, Lincoln just wanted to stop the spread of it rather they abolish it completely.To start off with the Union had 2.2 million people i n their army. They out numbered the Confederate States two to one. The average age of the soldiers that fought were 25.8 years old. This whole thing was led by Abraham Lincoln.
